When thinking about Croatia, most people have the image of the clear blue sea, islands and sunny beaches. And while Croatia is all those things, it is also much more.
In the northern part of Croatia, between the beautiful rivers of Mura and Drava, there is a region called Međimurje which literally translates to ‘between Mura river’. The enchanting, green scenery full of hills, vineyards, forests, and picturesque villages is ideal for anyone who enjoys nature and likes to escape the bustling cities, relax and reconnect with nature. And while it is gorgeous any time of the year, there is something particularly charming about the winter there when all the small hills are covered in snow, creating beautiful idyllic scenery.
With the many villages spread out on the top of the hills, you can easily choose between some very nice accommodation. Whether it is in the guesthouses, Airbnb, or hotels, one thing is for sure – the people in Međimurje are warm and kind and will welcome you as the best hosts, doing everything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
The area is full of history and culture but what you will most like about it is nature – being at the border of the Alpine foothills in the north-western part which makes it ideal for the many vineyards, the south-eastern part of Međimurje connects to the Panonian Plain and is used mostly for agriculture. The hills and forests are also home to numerous animals and one of the most beautiful places that you can go to if you like animals is definitely the Deer farm near Sveti Martin na Muri, that will take your breath away.
The deers walking freely on the many acres of the farm, enjoying their natural habitat will let you admire them from a safe distance and if you’re in luck sometimes let you come a bit closer. In any case, you will feel the tranquility of their presence and enjoy their graciousness and calm.
When in Međimurje, part of the connecting with nature certainly includes tasting the products it has to offer in this region. Take a stroll down the wine road, visiting the many family-owned vineyards and cellars that produce excellent wine. Each family has their own secret in wine production and you will enjoy tasting the differences. Accompany the wine tasting by trying some of the traditional delicacies of Međimurje, such as ‘meso z tiblice’, the meat prepared in a special way that is acknowledged as a specialty of the county on a European level and proudly carries the protected geographical indication or PGI label.
While in the area, the best way to end the day is to relax, recharge and pamper yourself in a thermal spa, especially when it is cold outside. Sveti Martin na Muri has excellent thermal spas with a long tradition and the water being one of the best quality thermal waters in Europe, great for detox and relaxation. You will most certainly enjoy the benefits of the thermal water to revitalise and recuperate your energy. And as a final touch, treat yourself to a massage before you set off at the end of the day to enjoy the most beautiful sunset over the hills.
